The province of Huamanga, was founded in the sixteenth century with the name of San Juan de la Frontera and was created by the Constitution of 1823 Its capital, the city of Ayacucho established by Decree of January 15, 1825, was founded on April 25, 1540, earning the title of town from May 17, 1544.
The history of the District of Ayacucho is influenced by pre-Columbian history of the Region of Ayacucho, starting AC 22.000 years ago about the presence of the first men found in a cave that is known by the name "Pikimachay" or "flea Cave", which is 24 m. wide and 12 m. height; this cave is located 18 km from the city of Ayacucho.
This cave was discovered in 1966 by American archaeologist Richard Mac Neish, who in their fan looking for the origin of maize in America, reaches and manages to discover this Ayacucho oldest evidence of human presence in the Central Andes.
Between 500 BC 1100 AD, the Wari Empire was formed on the basis of Warpas, Nazca and Tiahuanaco emerged. Ayacucho was the political and administrative center of the first pre-Incan Andean empire, which reached high levels of quality in production of ceramics, textiles, metals and stone, between 1.100 to 1.420 dc in the period of the Chanca.
